how do you tell if there is a underground spring under Your Garden?
When we moved into are house we where told that there is a underground spring going Thu the bottom of the garden and when it gets wet it floods but i have neer fond it.
First, when it’s not flooded check for any areas where the soil is moist or wet while the areas around it are dryer or dry (that may be many feet away). All the springs I know of the water slowly comes UP from the the land (it’s the pressure of the water below ground that pushes it up), there are some springs were the water comes out, such as on a hillside. Once you find a place that seem to be moist or wet all the time try to find the center of that area and dig, all the springs I’ve seen are just 3-4 feet below ground where you can actually hit water and it will pool in the pit you dug. Some may be more shallow also, we hand one on the farm where the water pooled on top of the ground and actually created it’s own small stream, so you may hit it as shallow as 1 foot deep. Another method and much easier is to take a wood stake 3-4 feet long and hammer it into the ground leaving one foot Above Ground (so you can remove it later). Let the stake remain there overnight and pull it back out (this will be hard to do so you’ll need someone with some muscle, and even then you may have to rig up some sort of lever to do it with). Once it’s out of the ground check the bottom areas for any wet wood, if there water under ground it will soak into the wood thoroughly overnight, even if there’s little water there it will still partially soak into the outer part of the wood. Try this at different locations 2 feet from the last spot until you find a wet spot or you don’t. Don’t do this soon after a rain, try using the stake during a dry spell.
A few words of caution:
1. If your house is an older home that may be an existing (or an older) septic system & drain field even if you live in a town or near a city (some towns and cities didn’t have sewer systems at the beginning and everyone used their own septic (sewer) tank below ground. All septic tanks had a drain field and sometimes that drain field would not drain down into the soil well or became clogged and worn out, in those cases the rains would cause water to stand (flood) above the bad drain field in a small area and eventually slowly soak into the ground after a short while. So if you start digging and you start to find some unusually dark, black, dirty soil or water and it has some sewer odor to it then I’d stop and fill it back in. Also, that area may just be an area of soil were water just doesn’t soak into the ground very well, that will also cause it to pool or flood until it slowly soaks into the ground over time. Some soils compositions do not absorb water very well or quickly, you can see those places everywhere (streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, etc.)
2. If you do decide to dig and the pit is becoming as deep as 3 feet there’s a risk that the sides of the pit could cave in around you. Depending on the type of soil in that area it could be a type that could collapse easily or a type that wouldn’t collapse at all. In construction in is required to have shoring installed around any dig that is 4 feet or more deep for safety to prevent any collapse. It’s been shown that only 2 feet of dirt around someones feet and legs will trap them in the dig, 3 feet or more could bury them if they fell or was knocked down from the side collapsing upon them. If you do dig more than 2 feet deep dig all the sides of the pit at a slope of about 45 degrees, sloping all the sides will prevent any risk of the soil collapsing/caving in on anyone in the dig.
If it is a spring and you do dig down to the water it will start to slowly pool in the pit, the deeper you did and the wider the pit will help determine the depth size of the spring. Springs usually flow and fill slowly and may take days to fill up to it’s maximum water level. So if you see water starting to percolate up from your digging I’d suggest you stop and wait to see how deep it will become. Once the pooled water maintains the same pressure as the underground water supply it will stop filling. It will take a few days for the dirt to settle down to the bottom and you’ll have Clear Water in the spring. If you ever consider using the spring water for cooking or drinking I’d suggest you don’t until you have a proper spring house/building built around it to prevent any contamination from rains & Rain Water flowing in from above ground and be sure to have it tested at the health department or other qualified testing lab also. Other than that it can be safely used to wash the car, water the lawn and garden, etc..

What should I plant in my small Michigan garden this spring to make our own baby food ????
My wife is due with our first child on May 11th (Mothers Day!!!) We have a nice garden every year . . . but this year we want to plant things to make our own organic Baby food. Looking for ideas from people who have done it.
Yes, have done it in the past and could do it now if someone asked. You can grow beets, carrots, sweet potatoes,spinach, peas, tomatoes (for when a little older) green beans, blueberries, asparagus, acorn squash. You can cook and puree most of the vegetables in a blender making it quite smooth. You can make these foods in quantities by buying and using pressure canner for preserving quantities of these purees. You can also get a vacuum seal seal-a-meal and freeze these yummy baby foods. Michigan has many local farms that grow organic. If you cant grow enough yourself, get a list of the farms in your area, purchase in bulk, preserve or freeze. I wont eat store bought food anymore. Stores do not have to post if a fruit or vegetable is genetically altered or the pesticides used to grow. I also buy my meat in bulk from the local farms. There are many Amish and Menonite farms in the area that raise meat in a natural organic environment. I also live in Michigan and we are so lucky that we have all these farms, orchards, and organic farmers. You can start your baby off right from the get go with Your Own produce or from our many organic farmers.
